Wrinkles
and folds represent signs of muscular activity. Every time we smile,
laugh, frown or exhibit other emotions the delicate facial muscles
contract. In some of us facial muscular activity is excessive or
facial muscles are stronger and hence wrinkles might appear earlier
than usual and often are more pronounced than in others.
Indikation
Dynamic wrinkles such as worry lines, forehead wrinkles, "crow's
feet"
What
is botulinumtoxin and how does it work?
Botulinumtoxin is produced by a bacterium, Clostridium botulinum.
Injected into muscles the substance blocks nerval impulses and selectively
relaxes the muscle so that a contraction is prevented. This process
is called cosmetic enervation. Other nerval qualities such as sensibility
of the skin are not affected.
Due
to the selective inhibition of particular muscles the overlying
skin relaxes and is freed form permanent mechanical (muscular) alteration.
Mainly used for worry lines, the effect is seen after 3-5 days and
will last for 3-6 months after the first treatment. The duration
of the result is increased with repetetive applications, so that
one will need less injections over a given period of time, owing
to the specific muscles becoming weaker.
Our
experience
Botulinumtoxin A (Dysport®, Botox®, Vistabel®, Xeomin®) is a very safe and effective
drug. It has been used for many years not only in cosmetic surgery
but also for other indications in dermatology and neurology. The
specific use in the treatment of wrinkles such as worry lines and
crow's feet represents a solely cosmetic procedure which is proven
to give very satisfactory results, if used properly and for the
correct indication.
Treatment
After adequate dilution botulinumtoxin is administered with a very
fine needle into the desired region. Using a microneedle the procedure
is almost painfree, a slight temporary bruising due to the injections
rarely beeing the only side effect. Once the application is completed
the areas are cooled to minimize swelling and bruising.
After
the treatment
For two hours after the procedure no make-up should be applied and
the head should be kept in an upright position.
