Department of Anaesthesiology in the Clinic for Plastic Surgery Mannheim

Patientin nachher

Martin Drautz, M.D.
Head of the Department of Anaesthesia
Specialist in Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine

Dr. Martin Drautz is a specialist for anesthesia, intensive and emergency medicine and since 2003 head of the department of anesthesia of the Mannheimer Clinic for Plastic Surgery.
His experience over more than 15 years as a specialist for anesthesia at several university hospitals with the highest medical supply guarantees a personally anesthesiologic support on highest level. This contains the whole spectrum of modern and safe different types of anesthesia and Dr. Drautz will discuss the most advantageous method in your special case and inform you comprehensively about the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the risks and side effects, of the type of anesthesia you will receive.

With the demonstration of the first ether anesthesia by the dentist W. T. G. Morton in the year 1846  for a surgery by the surgeon J. C. Warren from Boston, the foundation-stone for the anesthesia was put by W. T. G. Morton. In the 19. century a patient coud only hope to fall as rapidly as possible during a surgeryin faint. All past anesthesia methods were very unsatisfactory.

Only with the beginning of the controlled and planned anesthesia the surgery could take the great development. In the last decades the anesthesia has itself developed unbelievably.
There were a number of new anesthetics developed, which placed earlier experiences with anesthesia in annother light.
Independently if your anesthesia takes 15 minutes or 4 hours, within a few minutes you will awake and have your orientation back. You will surprised ask yourself if really already is past.
Patients, who vomited for hours after anesthesia in the past  and did not awake before the evening, cannot believe that they get something to drink very soon after the anesthesia.

The general Anesthesia offers a maximum stress reduction. During anesthesia, there is loss of consciousness and suppression of pain perception throughout the entire body. It is a condition, which resembles that of a deep sleep. The artificial respiration is guaranteed by an endotracheal tube. By the employment of newest anesthesia technics, medicine individually to the patient and complete monitoring of the vital parameters we have here an anesthesia, which has relativly small side effects with a maximum of safety.
In our clinic we prefere for the following operations the general anesthesia: breast augmentation, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, gluteal augmentation. Of course
all other surgeries can be accomplished in general anesthesia when disired by the patient.

The analgesia and sedation (twilight sleep) is a procedure which comes only through the development of newer medicines more and more, in particular also in the plastic surgery, for application. The surgery actually takes place in local anesthesia. Contrary to the general anesthesia no endotracheal tube is inserted for artificial respiration into the trachea and the patient breathes himself. The anesthesiologist constantly monitors all vital signs. To protect from stress here continuously a sedative or a sleeping drug will be administered to the patient and if necessary additional an analgetic agent. By this combination it is reached that the patient “oversleeps“ the procedure completely relaxed. Depending upon kind and duration of the surgery the patient can leave our clinic in company very early after the procedure.
The following surgeries are accompished in analgesia and sedation: liposuction, gynecomastia, facelift, minilift, frontlift, blepharoplasty, otoplasty etc.. On request the patient can get a general anesthesia of course for all above mentioned surgeries.

The regional anesthesia offers the possibility of a pain-free surgery during certain surgeries and the appropriate indications. The patient receiving regional anesthesia remains conscious and alert, in contrast to the patient under general anesthesia the patient has no pain during the procedure.  In combination with the general anesthesia the regional anesthesia is used for long indolency after the surgery. Typical indications for the regional anesthesia are surgeries of the hand (e.g. Morbus Dupuytren, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.) and surgeries of the feet.

Before each surgery Dr. Drautz will discuss the most advantageous anesthesia method in your case and inform you comprehensively about the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the risks and side effects, of the type of anesthesia you will receive.
With our team of well experienced surgeon and anesthesiologist, which works for many years in excellent cooperation together, you have not to be afraid of the surgery.

Dr. Martin Drautz is pleased to welcome you in the Mannheimer Clinic for Plastic Surgery and is glad to take over your anesthesiologic treatment.
