Incorrect position or deformities of the external ear influence the outer
appearance of an individual and might even lead to psychological or emotional
stress or insecurity. Deformities of the external ear are mostly congenital
and present from birth. Not infrequently are children with projecting
ears teased in school.
The definite shape and size of the ears is completed quite early in life.
Due to this, other than in surgery of the nose, otoplasty is often performed
in children before they reach their school age (from 5 years of age).
To correct the ears an incision is placed behind the ear and the cartilage
is reduced to a certain amount. The remaining cartilage is then carefully
scratched and moulded into the desired shape. The techique allows for
correction of position, size and shape of the ears.
In children the operation is usually performed in general anesthesia whereas
in adults the quite limited procedure is carried out in local anesthesia or under sedation.
of stay in the clinic
Either as an outpatient procedure or with a stay of 1-2 days in the clinic.
A special dressing is applied to the head after the procedure and is to
be worn for two days. After that the hair will be washed and dressed in
the clinic together with inspection of wound healing. Sutures are removed
after 2 weeks. To ensure the result of the operation it is very important
to wear a headband during nighttime for approximately 4 weeks.
